Guard your heart, defend your faith

Check your heart, know the truth

My oldest, Chloe got her learners permit and started DRIVING! Talk about fear! That first ride in the passenger seat while my baby took mine and her younger sisters life in her hands was a moment that taught me a lot about patience and giving up control! But I’m so happy for her. I remember what it was like getting behind the wheel for the first time myself.

For one of our first drives, we stopped over to see my nephew who is 20 years old. Chloe couldn’t wait to have Alex see her behind the wheel. While we were there talking to him, he being a typical 20 year old was telling Chloe some of the lesser known rules of driving, such as “When you turn a corner, see how fast you can go” or “25 is the speed limit, but you can easily go 35 without getting caught”

Thanks, kid!!!

This little story reminded me of something I read this week. In 1 Corinthians, Paul is telling the people of Corinth a few things before He signed off on his letter. These words really struck me this week:

“Be on your guard;
stand firm in the faith;
be courageous; be strong.
Do everything in love”
(1 Corinthians 16:13-14)

As Christians (as well as new drivers!) we have to remember what we are taught. False teachers (or older cousins!) might skew theology. We may read articles online that are not *quite* biblically accurate. People share things all of the time without knowing if it’s the truth.

We need to be on guard, checking what we hear in the Word. We need to stand firm in our faith, defending the truth. It’s not always easy to tell someone that what they are saying strays from biblical truth, but it’s what God calls us to do.

I did tell Alex (with love, of course!!) that his rules were not quite the law, and while we appreciate his advice and experience, we were going to follow the state driving rules right now.

In closing, I challenge you to test what you hear. When you are having a conversation about your faith, or listening to a teaching, pray. Ask the Spirit to open your ears to the truth. If you hear or see something that doesn’t seem right, check your bible.

 Stay strong. Be on your Guard and do it with love
