What are you showing the world?

For a small project for school, I need a picture of my family. Doesn’t seem like a big deal, but with two teenage daughters, it seems the four of us are never in the same place at the same time.

I told my kids this morning to plan that after school, we will be taking a quick picture outside. I’ll have my Dad come over, take a few shots, I’ll pick the best one and send it on. No big deal.

Or so I thought….

Right away I got push back.

“You are NOT taking my picture!”
“They are going to post that picture everywhere!”

I was annoyed, but when I really started to think about what was actually going on here, my heart broke.

My girls are teens growing into who they are in a heavily filtered, almost animated digital world.

None of their selfies are without a filter. They know exactly what side of their face looks best, they know how to stand, they know what faces to make.

But when I see their camera reels, none of these pictures look like my beautiful daughters. They look like fake versions of themselves, and it makes me really sad.

We live in a world where it’s not enough to just be ourselves. We have to be sure the lighting is just right, and that what we see when we preview every picture is a perfect, flawless version of ourselves.

But this is not how God created us to live.

One of my favorite verses in the Bible is a great one to live by:

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.

Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.

1 Peter 3:3-4

We spend so much time worrying about how we look, but what God tells us in His Word is that none of that matters!

People will notice physical beauty, but they will also notice how you act and how you treat them even MORE than what you are wearing.

God didn’t create you with a filter or in a pose. He knit together every fiber of your being and He did it with the intent of you being beautiful. Inside and out.

Don’t be afraid to be who God created you to be! And please don’t be ashamed to be who you are. Because even better than the perfect O.O.T.D., you are clothed in strength and dignity that comes from God’s Spirit living inside of you. And that is far more valuable than even any filter.

Proverbs 31:25 says of a Godly woman that she is:

“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”

Because when we live for Christ and His spirit dwells inside of us, we are made strong with His strength, and we have dignity and wisdom that comes from Him. And THAT’s what people notice when they encounter you!

We all need a little reminder

How many beautiful women do you know that need to be reminded of just how strong and dignified God created them to be?

I’ve gotten some new tools in my workshop recently, and with those tools I’ve been free to create some beautiful things that I hope will inspire you to reflect on and remember the truth that we find in God’s Word.

It’s been so much fun coming up with ways that I can use the gifts and tools God gave me, and create things that I hope will fill your heart, your hands and your home with the promises that God makes to you in the Bible!

I’ll leave you today with just a few of those promises ♥️

You are loved.

You were created with a plan and a purpose.

You are never separated from God.

You are worth more than rubies.

You are cherished.

You are redeemed.

It’s a beautiful day here today, so we’ll see if the family picture happens. But I’m thinking even more important than the picture, I need to remind my girls of this truth. (And maybe myself, too!)

  1. Angie, thank you so much for is and these. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy these. As you say ” if we’re not eating, we get hungry!’ Thanks for helping fill an empty spot in my hollow leg.
    ( old expression) but . . . . I’m old so . . . . .

    1. Arlene,
That’s how I feel about writing them! I let life get in the way, and I doubt whether or not anyone cares if I bother to write that week. So knowing it means something to you and encourages you in your relationship with God is a huge motivator for me! Thank you so much for sharing that with me today, I appreciate you!

  2. Thanks for the reminder of who we are – God’s chosen. You do such a wonderful job. Think about writing for devotionals that are published.

    1. Aww Sandy,
Thank you so much! I appreciate your kind words. Maybe someday, but I really do value the encouragement. I doubt myself plenty so you are very kind to push me along!

  3. Angie, thank you so much for this post. Being at home since March 2020, I often am not getting dressed up, and am taking a lot less “selfies”. I tell myself that I should get up earlier and do my makeup and hair, and put on clothes other than pajama pants, but it doesn’t happen. Who am I getting dressed up for? I appreciate what you said about your daughters and filters. I cut myself off from social media and the filters that they use a couple of years ago, and it has done wonders for my self-worth. Thank you for including the inspiring words at the end of your post. I needed that today! P.S. your new leather products, especially your mugs are GORGEOUS. Just what I need for my morning Bible and God time.

    1. Elisha, I totally get that!!! This whole year has thrown so many of us for a loop, and has taught me a lot about priorities. It might just be that God is calling you to spend more time on something else, and that’s ok! Don’t be afraid to take the pictures, remember that no one else will see the flaws that you do 😉
Thank you so much for your compliments of my work, I love what I do, so it’s a blessing to share it with you!!
