Each morning when we wake up, we are blessed with a new day. Every new day brings new perspectives, new choices, new attitudes and new challenges.

How do you start your day?

In Joshua chapters 23 & 24, we read the story of Joshua gathering his people to say his final goodbyes. He reminds them of how faithful God has been to them over the years that they all had together. He reminds them of the challenges they all faced and how God delivered them. In the beginning of chapter 24, he reminisces of some specific battles that they faced (which were scary and they weren’t even equipped to fight on their own!) Each time, God went before them and fought the battles ahead of them, because there was no way that they could not do it without Him.

Knowing this, Joshua gives the people a challenge (Ch 24:14-15): To fear the Lord and faithfully serve Him, or go their own way and serve their false gods and idols. It was a choice they each had to make for themselves.

Who we serve isn’t automatic. It’s not a decision that we make once and then it just “sticks”.

Once we choose to serve God, we have to continue to make that choice day after day in every circumstance, good or bad.

No matter what life throws at you, are you ready to make that commitment to God over and over again?  As humans, we tend to be fickle and easily tempted to trust in things that aren’t God.

All of these things and many more tempt us daily to trust them instead of God.

We need to focus on Him and turn away from the empty promises of these false idols.

When things get tough, why is it so easy to put our faith in things or people who will ultimately let us down? Remember God’s promise to always love you, protect you, rescue you and carry you. God doesn’t make promises He can’t keep.

When you wake up tomorrow morning, I challenge you to put the troubles of yesterday behind you and thank God for a new day. Before you get out of bed, tell Him that you are choosing to serve Him and ask Him to help guide your steps. Make it a habit to ask yourself the question Joshua asked the people:

“Who are you going to choose to serve today?”

Let’s grow together!

In the comments below, share with us which choice you want to make each day, and how you will do that. How different will your days look when you make this decision?

  1. This Sunday’s sermon at church was on the Prodigal son and reminded me how I am the Prodigal son who has gotten off-balance lately. In the busy days I have forgotten to stay focused on things right in front of me and humbly ask for help when I needed it… I want to remember to focus on God’s grace as he continues to love me though my mistakes and comes to meet me where I am.

  2. Thanks again, Angie, for our encouragement to dig a little deeper in God’s Word ?

    1. Yes. I woke with a bad attitude from the day before. My mind went to Phil 4:8. but the desire to complain won out. It is a minute by minute struggle sometimes. Thanks for the encouragement.

  3. Thank you for that reminder.. especially with one thing after another I know I wasn’t choosing Him.. I was overtaken with fear and anxiety. He reminds me that He is gracious and faithful even I look at my circumstances.
